A379 closed in Dawlish due to flooding

The A379 in Dawlish is currently closed in both directions due to flooding.

The main road through the town is closed between the Marine Parade junction and The Strand junction.

Police are redirecting traffic. Motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible or approach with care.

Dawlish has been hit by localised flooding following periods of torrential rain.

The Brook river, which runs through the town centre, burst its banks after water levels rose by around 2ft.

Station Road is also flooded.

Firefighters from across the region are dealing with localised flooding in a number of towns across Devon.

The Fire Service said it had received numerous reports of flood-related incidents this afternoon in the Chudleigh and Kingsteignton areas.

Last night, fire crews pumped water out of a number of properties in Bideford and Holsworthy following torrential rain.

The Met Office has put an amber-graded weather warning in place for today, warning residents to ‘be prepared’ for heavy rain and potential flooding.
