His comic character Edmund Blackadder was famously scathing when on-screen sidekick Baldrick suggested a "cunning plan" to solve the duo's most pressing problem.

Now Rowan Atkinson, who shot to worldwide fame and fortune playing Mr Bean as well as for his role in military comedy Blackadder, appears to have his own cunning scheme to secure his privacy – a secluded Westcountry holiday retreat.

The actor is said to be one of the famous figures interested in the "magical" £10 million seaside Gullet Estate near Salcombe in Devon. Mr Atkinson, who has also won planning permission for a futuristic five-bedroom property in the Home Counties, is said to be interested in the 155-acre estate on a peninsula in the Salcombe estuary.

Martin Lamb, of estate agents Savills, said: "It is true to say we have had several well-known names, or celebrities if you so call them, viewing the property, and interest has been expressed.

"It's not surprising, as it is a stunning, secluded property."

The Gullet Estate was put on the market last year by Robert MacDonald, a former Royal Marines officer, and his American wife, Carolyn, with a guide price of £10 million.

It includes a large, rambling house featuring a ballroom with a minstrels' gallery.

The house, which was built by Mr MacDonald's parents in the 1920s, would appeal to Mr Atkinson, who guards his privacy keenly, as it is visible only from the sea.

Several sets of farm buildings are included in the sale, along with 35 acres of foreshore on a long-term lease.

“This is a fantastic property and a great couple that are selling it, what a shame, part of the McDonald history. Worked for the couple a few times at the yearly shoot party's and enjoyed every minute of it.”

“Looks like a stunning location. I'm a big fan of Salcombe and it would be great to have Mr Bean living nearby. Wonder if he'll bring his pea-green Mini to Devon too?”
