Adopters urged to 'Make that Leap'
An adoption campaign urging people to ‘Make that Leap’ and adopt a child from Plymouth is being backed by the kangaroos at Paignton Zoo!
Social worker, Danielle Tweedie, from Plymouth City Council’s Adoption Team joined a mob of kangaroos in the hope that some furry friends would give their campaign aimed at people from all walks of life throughout Devon and Cornwall, some extra kick.
People interested in adopting are being asked to ‘Make that Leap’ and call Plymouth’s adoption team or log on to the website to complete the adoption quick questionnaire to find out if they could potentially adopt.
Danielle said: “We are very grateful to Paignton Zoo for helping us to spread the word about adoption. We are targeting the whole of Devon and Cornwall with this campaign because quite often, children cannot be matched with adopters in the same city as their biological parents, so we must find suitable adopters from other areas.”

Last year 51 children in Plymouth needed adoption and 24 new, successful adoption applications were made from people looking to adopt. From those applications, 19 were from heterosexual couples, one was from a same sex couple and four were from single adopters.
Plymouth currently recruits potential adopters within a 50 mile radius of the city, a strategy that has proved very successful in recent years. This ensures social worker time is used to the best effect with less time on the road and more face to face contact with potential adopters.
Danielle explains: “We want to hear from people from a range of different backgrounds and lifestyles – it doesn’t matter if you are single, over 40 or don’t own your own home. What really matters is that you can offer a child or sibling group a loving and supportive family for life.”
