NEWS that super-fast broadband is to reach Bovey Tracey next year has been welcomed by local MP Mel Stride.

Several South Devon towns are to benefit from broadband to help businesses and individuals be more efficient and competitive.

The Central Devon MP has been a vocal advocate for improved technology in rural areas and has been instrumental in arguing for bodies like Ofcom to speed up the implementation of high-speed technology.

He spoke during a Westminster broadband debate earlier this year pressing for faster coverage to be extended to an estimated 98 per cent of the UK population and, in particular, to rural communities in Devon.

Mr Stride said: "This is excellent news for people and businesses in these towns and is an example of the Government working hard with the private sector to implement vital services like broadband.

"Devon, in particular rural areas, has struggled with slow speeds for too long and this has affected the ability to do business."

The announcement by BT pledges to roll-out its £2.5billion high-speed fibre broadband network to 129,000 more homes and businesses.

The latest communities to benefit also include Torquay, Totnes and Dawlish. Upgrades will occur throughout next year.
