A MULTI-MILLION pound Totnes riverside housing development has been turned down by planners.

Members of South Hams District Council's planning committee decided to go against their own officers' recommendations and kick out Linden Homes' scheme for 100 new homes, commercial units and a 60-room care home off Steamer Quay in Bridgetown.

Councillors voted 15-7 in favour of refusing the Newton Abbot-based developer's application.

Residents in Bridgetown welcomed the news, saying allowing the proposed development would have made traffic congestion worse in the already clogged up area, would have had an impact on agricultural land, would have departed from the local development plan and would not have provided enough affordable homes.
