STAFF from Warburtons' Newton Abbot depot swapped their bakery overalls to help clean up a beach.

They went to Wembury beach, near Plymstock, as part of a nationwide What A Difference A Day Makes in communities across Britain.

The day saw hundreds of Warburtons bakery employees from across Britain volunteer at local charities, youth centres, schools and sports clubs.

Depot manager David Scott, team members Paul Allridge and Helen Davis and the Newton Abbot business development team's Claire Orrin, Mark Morsby, Darren Hodgson-Baylis and Catherine Evans helped the National Trust by clearing rubbish from the beach.

They also painted the exterior wood of the beach's recruitment hut and marine centre.

Mr Scott said: "The day was about bringing together employees, friends, families, suppliers and customers to make a real difference in a single day on a national scale, but on a local level.

"We didn't want to pick just one charity or cause to support.

"Instead, we were looking to help as many as possible in a real hands-on way.

"The generosity and commitment shown by our staff was unbelievable.

"We all really enjoyed lending a hand and making a real difference to people in our community."

Lorna Sherriff, National Trust warden for South Devon, said: "We were really grateful for the time Warburtons staff dedicated to help us out.

"Wembury beach is visited by local people and holidaymakers alike. The work of the group will have a visual impact for all visitors and prolong the life of the exterior of the marine centre."

More than 50 teams of Warburtons staff took to the streets of their communities after requests were sent out to charities and worthy causes who were in desperate need of volunteers.
