A FISH and chip shop in Torquay is celebrating once again after being named the best in the region in industry awards.

Hanbury's in Babbacombe was crowned the best fish and chip shop in South West England as part of the National Fish and Chip Awards 2013, organised by Seafish, the authority on seafood.

Owner David Hanbury will now compete against nine of the UK's best fish and chip shops for the coveted independent takeaway fish and chip shop of the year award which will be announced in London in January.

Mr Hanbury said: "We are delighted to win the regional title especially as Hanbury's has a long history with the awards, having been involved with the process for 25 years.

“I agree with the most commenting here, that Hanbury's it not the best tasting and also over prised. I would go to Shiphay except that that shop is never open - and if you are ever lucky enough to find them open then you have to wait ages since they only start the cooking process when you give your order. Petes Place in Barton is just rubbish and unfriendly (I wouldn't even feed my pig with 'food' from them). Hele on the other hand - now they are good, really good - and the staff friendly. Well done to them at Hele. Consider yourselves the true winners of this award.”

“omnivore23 listen chum chips cooked in olive oil are delicious and superiior to so called vegetable oil. YOu remind me of one of these people who never experiment with new ideas simply because sombody else has told you you cannot do something. who has told you that? ONe thing i have learned is the things you are told you cannot do things in cooking are almost often always wrong. YOu hear os many people in life say you cannot do this because it won't work well e.t.c and when you try things for yourself and you see that they do you realize almost everybody is nearly often always wrong about 95 percent of the time if not always. Figuring things out for yourself makes you realize almost everybody is often always wrong about things they think you shouldn't do.”

“Shiphay Chippy is better in my opinion! Also like the London Fryer in Preston. If I'm in Babbacombe I go to Drakes. I can't understand why Hanburys win so often but each to his own.”
