Cllr Faulkner said: "After completing the GP referral scheme, I felt fitter and stronger. I have lost 1st 2lb.
"This has inspired me to become a member of Lifestyle Health and Fitness Suite to continue with my new, healthier lifestyle."
The GP referral scheme involves enabling patients to discover the benefits of exercise by following a fitness programme that is supervised by qualified instructors in one of many locations around the country.
Lifestyle has been taking part in the scheme since January, 2005, and is one of nine centres in Torbay to offer the programme.
Cllr Faulkner was allocated a dedicated fitness instructor who put together a tailored fitness programme that involved three gym visits a week and a mixture of cardiovascular and toning exercises.
Cllr Faulkner said his wife Jenny, who is also a member of Torbay Council, is an inspiration to him.
He said: "Last year, she conquered her fears and learned how to swim.
"Her instructor, Jacquie Lovett at Waves leisure pool, also in the Riviera International Conference Centre, was patient and calm, which helped to keep Jenny's nerves at bay and now she is a competent swimmer.
"I believe that no matter what your age or your ability, there is always a route back to a healthier lifestyle. My wife and I are living proof of this.
"I now regularly attend the gym in the morning while my wife takes a swim. Our reward afterwards is tea and toast in the coffee shop.
"I believe having small targets can help motivate people to achieve their healthier lifestyle ambition.
"Once I achieve losing a further stone I intend to maintain my weight and fitness levels."
