EARLY years providers in Torbay have been named the best in the country following a glowing Ofsted inspection earlier this year.

The report reveals Torbay has the biggest percentage of registered early years and childcare providers in the country to be rated as 'outstanding' for their overall effectiveness.

Provisional figures released by Ofsted show 32 per cent received the top rating in their most recent inspections, compared with England's average of 12 per cent.

The percentage of active early years providers rated as 'outstanding' or 'good' was also the highest at 91 per cent, 17 per cent higher than in the rest of the country.

No providers in Torbay were classed as inadequate and only nine per cent were rated as satisfactory.

Cllr Chris Lewis, Torbay Council's executive lead for children, schools and families, said: "Well done to all our childminders, pre-schools and nurseries who are providing such high quality care for young children in Torbay.

"To be recognised by Ofsted as having the highest percentage of good and outstanding providers is a great achievement.

"The quality of our registered early years providers is a testament to their hard work and great news for young children.

"Good early education is crucial because it benefits children in the long term. It enhances their cognitive, language and social development and helps them fulfil their full potential."
