“Not many people know this but this is not David Essex's first appearance in Torbay. In the winter of 1967 (when he was a complete unknown) he appeared at the then Festival Hall on Paignton sea front in a show called (I think) the Fantastiks. It was poorly attended and some of the cast were said to sleep on the stage as they were short of money. I was working at the theatre at the time and remember him as being genuinely friendly.”
