Bay pair in front at Dartmouth's Regatta 5-miler
LEE TURNER and Pete Monaghan completed a Torbay AC one-two at the Dartmouth Regatta Road Race on Saturday afternoon.
Turner led home a field of 182 finishers to complete the five-miler in 28mins 50secs, with club mate Monaghan not far behind in 29:06.
No fewer than five of the first ten runners home wore Torbay AC colours, with Simon Longthorpe just missing out on making it a clean sweep of the podium places.
Longthorpe was locked in battle with Roger Easterbrook and Mark Cowen of Exeter Harriers, but had to settle for fifth in 29:16 — four seconds behind third-placed Easterbrook, and a shoelace behind Cowen.
Andrew Longthorpe was seventh in 29:36, with Jon Parkinson next home three seconds later.
And Richard Dayment, of host club Dartmouth AC, rounded off the top ten with a time of 30:13.
South Devon AC's fastest man Colin Peters was runner-up in the MV40 class behind Parkinson. Peters was 17th overall in 33:07.
Brixham Harriers were led home by Paul Nicoll in 34:40. He was also second in the MV50 category behind Exmouth Harrier Hugh Marsden.
Other local category winners were Monaghan in the MV45s, Torbay AC's Wendy Urban in the FV45s (34:47), Dartmouth's Marie Jones in the FV55s (47:48) and Dartmouth's Stephen Denbigh in the U18s (33:19).
There was also a youth race held as part of the Dartmouth Regatta Road Race festivities, and that was won by City of Plymouth's James Blackford in 9:06.
THE EVENING before hitting the road at Dartmouth, many club athletes were tackling five miles of off-road running through Haldon Forest Park for Dawlish Coasters' annual Forest Flyer.
Thames Hare & Hounds runner John McFarlane won it in 30:00, 22 seconds ahead of Torbay AC man Arran Tocknell in second.
Simon Longthorpe again just missed out on a podium finish, taking fourth in 31:40, while Teignbridge Trotters' David Tomlin was fifth in 32:15.
Tomlin's club mate Daryl Milford grabbed the last top-ten spot in 33:31, getting the better of fellow Trotter Wavell Vigers by just three seconds.
South Devon AC's Jeremy Hocking was next home, taking 12th spot in 34:06.
THE AUGUST Bank Holiday weekend is always a busy one for races, and two other Devon events offered testing challenges to South Devon runners.
Teign Valley Running Club's Penny Clapham completed Saturday's Oke Croak — a tough 10.4-mile run over Dartmoor that involves 2,000ft ascent — in 2:36:35.
Meanwhile, Monday's Peter Tavy Plod saw Teignbridge Trotter Mark Becker finish 12th in 35:01.
Simon Bunday was Dawlish Coasters' best man in 15th (38:13). Les Elms was 25th in 42:17.
Trotters Sally Ingledew (45:06) and Jo Becker (46:55) also finished well.
