Beaches - is it really dogs or is it humans that are the messiest?
I live in lovely Paignton, with a wonderful stretch of beach that is open to dogs from October to to April. And just across a single road is Paignton Green, again a great expanse of green grass, perfect for families to play games, and dogs to walk with their owners.
My gripe? The constant negative comments made about dog walkers not clearing up after their dogs, and that beaches should ban dogs all year round. Yes, I DO agree, some dog walkers frustrate the life out of me, not picking up after their dogs, and a lot of the time it's because they are engrossed with texting or phoning someone, or talking, and aren't watching their dogs, I see it often. However MOST dog owners do clear up. So why am I starting this debate again - the attrocious scene on the beach tonight when I walked me dogs. No exaggeration, I had to walk past 2 nappies, at least 15 bottles and cans, 3 pieces of clothing, 4 children's toys and an uncountable amount of tissues and plastic bags. And this was just on one stretch of Preston beach.

It's absolutely disgusting. Then when you cross to the green you have more litter, fish and chip bags, more bottles and sweet papers. I am a language teacher in Paignton, and my students are often telling me how dirty Paignton is, and they're right. Some people have no morals, because there are plenty of bins (and dog bins for that matter) all around the beach and the green, there is just no excuse.
Most of the time, outside of the main season and main hours of the day, the beaches lay empty. Why can't dog walkers still go on the beaches outside peak time, like they can in Cornwall? I can honestly say we'd leave a lot less mess than I've seen tonight, and every other time I go there.

So I'm asking for people to make more noise about rubbish in general, and stop harping on about dog poo. I mean, children's nappies!! It's so filthy.

“Eggbbound. Some of your comments are about as absent as your ability to see when your are having your chain pulled - do you also have a memory shorter than a goldfish's?”

“mm I agree I own a dog and always pick up after him. However there are people that blatantly do not. I was outside hoopers and an elderly lady was pulling her pooing dog along she knew he was pooing - right in the middle of the pavement -.
I know this rant was about leaving dog poo debate alone but please cant we enforce the parking wardens with powers to prosecute dog poopers. It really bugs me.
Yes litters not nice but to be honest out all the times I have been to paignton (Live in Torquay) haven't seen a litter problem?”

“Strange, some posts have mysteriously gone missing. Is that because Spellbound used a naughty word, or did they do it themselves to not look silly?”

“Hmmmm
I see the maturity of this debate has not risen much and the parrot is still on song and refuses to answer a challenge. Still, one thing's for sure when it comes to poo, my dog isn't the one full of it.
Never mind, I'll take Spellbound and Brodsky's advice and shoot anyone who litters (including food scraps), urinates, poos or vomits in a public place including the sea (and their parents if the are under 14) and feline trespassers in my garden. We'll add to that anyone who goes to the beach without showering, isn't wearing pristine, freshly laundered swimwear (you'd be amazed how disgusting swimwear can be) and fails to remove their 'non-beach' shoes before stepping on the sand. Perhaps we should then install showers all along the seafront so that any offensive substances in sea water are removed and ensure the beach is hygenically cleaned as the tide goes out. Clear all shipping from the worlds oceans - especially leisure craft (thanks for the prompt wildswimmer). Let's not forget to create a wildlife exclusion zone around any public area lest someone encounters a bird poo, rid the sand of all the bits of seaweed and multitudes of crustacea and invertebrates and all the rivers will have to have massive dams constructed to stop all the nasties that get washed into then anding up in the sea.
This is like the debate on vaccines, a rabid fixation on one issue whilst ignoring the others.”

“As a keen all year round sea swimmer , I get sick of the nonsense surrounding dogs on beaches, I have no problem what so ever with dogs , bad owners yes and I have no hesitation ticking them off, but I absolutely love seeing the pure joy dogs have running around on the beach, humans pollute the earth not animals. I am not a dog owner but when I read the silly sniffy comments about dogs from people ,I despair , no doubt they do not consider the damage to the environment the chemicals they use blindly on a daily basis from washing power to bleach and toilet cleaners do to the environment or the plastic chocking and polluting our oceans. For the record the water has been crystal clear and absolutely wonderful to swim in lately , the only time I do not like it is ironically the high days in summer, yes humans , Jet Ski's ECT... when the water is murky and smells of diesel.”

“Dogs pooing on the beach should be destroyed and the owners fined and banned from keep the pooing dogs. Or better still, lets all poo on the beach and so long as we "pick" it up with a bit of sand around it, it will be fine.”
