Beer guides Dainton into Basil Steer final
DAINTON PARK'S junior team are through to the final of the Basil Steer Trophy after beating Fingle Glen 2-1 at Exeter.
The club's junior captain Hayden Priscott led the team out in the first match against the Glen's James Urquhart, and found himself 1up playing the 17th hole.
A wayward second shot meant he struggled to make a five, but James three-putted and failed to capitalise.
He looked like making amends on the 496-yard par five last though, putting his second shot to within 8ft of the hole.
In reply Hayden went right off the green, almost out of bounds, but he chipped on and sank an incredible 20ft putt for a birdie.
James still had his putt to win the hole and halve the match, but he missed it and first blood went to Dainton.
Joe Rowbotham also played well under his handicap, but his opponent had an exceptional day and was 4up with four to play.
Joe birdied the 15th and parred the 16th to get it back to two, but he lost 3&1 on the 17th and the match was levelled at 1-1.
However, in the final match Ross Beer brought success for Dainton, shooting level par to win his match 4&3.
The final is against Stover later in the month.
Back at Dainton, Nathan Brown took the honours in Division One of the club's monthly medal.
Playing in the last group of the morning, Nathan began erratically with a par, birdie, bogey, but his game settled with five more pars over the front nine.
He continued level until the par three 15th, where he put the ball to within 1ft with a seven iron off the tee and tapped in for a two.
Another birdie on the par five 16th and level par on the final two holes gave him a gross 70.
Playing off a handicap of two, that gave Nathan a nett score of 68, which was four shots under the CSS, meaning he was cut to a handicap of one at the end of the day.
Nathan says he is hoping to carry his new handicap through to the end of the season, although his aim of topping the Ballers leaderboard this year has just become one shot harder!
Second in Division One was Richard Ward, who shot a gross round of 73, which also gave him a nett 68. Richard's round also contained three birdies, but he rued his double bogey six on the par four tenth hole. In third place was Mike Murphy with a nett 70.
Division Two was won by Miles Benstead. Miles bettered his 16 handicap by one shot by shooting a nett 70, thanks chiefly to three pars on the back nine.
Second was Ian Schafer and third was Colin Evans.
Division Three was won by James Fisher, who in fact shot the best nett score of the day. Playing off a handicap of 18 he played eight holes to level par, giving him a nett 66 and a new handicap of 16 to take back to his Fulford Golf Club, near York, where he is currently studying management and finance at university.
Second in Division Three was Gary Turner and third was Mike Chapple.
Amanda Milverton topped Division One of Dainton Park's ladies' stableford with 32 points. Pauline Ashton was second with 30 points, one ahead of Sue Whitehead in third.
Division Two was topped by Pauline Coles with 34 points. Marcia Vojtisek (31pts) and Nicky Church (30pts) completed the top three.
Following the competition, Coles had her handicap reduced to 35.
