Bikers boosted by ex-world champ
YOUNG bikers on a special half-term off-road course at Wheeldon Off-Road Centre, near Totnes, had a huge shock following an unexpected appearance from a surprise instructor — two-time World Superbike champion Troy Corser.
Australian Corser had picked the centre, based at Halwell near Totnes, for a family break after finishing the 2009 championship at Portimao in Portugal a few days earlier.
The BMW factory rider enrolled his son, Kalani, into Wheeldon's junior off-toad training programme as part of his holiday.
Although Kalani regularly rides an off-road motorcycle at home, Troy was keen for his son to gain further off-road tuition under the expert eye of ACU accredited instructors and Wheeldon owners Jim and Andrew Savery.
While he was there, the 1996 and 2005 world champion and Australian schoolboy motocross champion passed on some valuable advice to a number of the children taking part, before taking to the circuit himself for a few laps.
The four days of training had already attracted record numbers, with more than 80 young riders – including 16 girls – and Corser's appearance just capped the week off, according to Andrew.
"We are privileged that the Corser family chose Wheeldon Farm as their family holiday destination," he said.
"Of course, young Kalani Corser had been taught very well by his father but this was the first opportunity he had to ride a proper dirt circuit on one of our junior courses.
"All the children on the circuit showed great respect for each other and very much appreciated the encouragement from Troy himself during the session.
"I think he would make a great teacher, but fear his salary would be out of our league!"
Wheeldon boasts a 30,000sq ft indoor off-road arena, and trains young riders in everything from basic skills and motorcycle safety to race preparation.
Corser said: "The variety in the circuits at the complex and its all-year indoor riding can't be found anywhere else that I know of.
"The staff were particularly helpful and friendly and the whole set up makes it a great place for a family get away. I will definitely be going back."
The next junior training to take place at Wheeldon Off-Road Centre will be on December 21, costing £70 per session (morning or afternoon).
Space is limited to 12 per session, and the first session is free for anyone booking a week-long stay. Call 01548 821784 for more details.
