Blurt nominated as the south west’s Digital Hero
Jayne Hardy, co-founder of Plymouth based mental health charity Blurt is one of three regional finalists in the 2012 TalkTalk Digital Heroes Awards. With public voting now open until Sunday 18 November, Blurt are hoping to take the top spot and scoop £5,000 towards their community based project.
After an eight year battle with depression, Jayne and husband Dom, founded Blurt in 2011. The charitable organisation has two ambitious aims: to tackle the stigma surrounding depression, and to make sufferers realise that they are not alone. Through the website www.blurtitout.org and Twitter (@BlurtAlerts), Blurt provides people who are feeling isolated with an online mentor, and provides information about ways people can help themselves, such as taking up exercise or changing their diet. Each mentor has experienced depression and, while they cannot give advice, they listen and support mentees so that they can recognise that there is always hope.

Jayne said: "I am so proud to have been nominated for the second year running. Over the last 12 months Blurt has helped over 500 people. We now have 3,800 Twitter followers and 770 Facebook likes, acquiring valuable social media and web building knowledge along the way.
Dom and I manage Blurt in our spare time so it’s really gratifying to have made such an impact on peoples lives. The amazing thing about the digital aspect of Blurt is that a mentor in Plymouth could be providing support for someone in Kent suffering from depression, there are no boundaries and we are excited about expanding the possibilities further and tackling the stigma around the disease."
