BOB Geldof's Boomtown Rats will headline this summer's Chagstock South Devon music festival.

It will be one of only two UK shows this year for the original line-up of the band, who had hits in the Seventies and Eighties with songs including Rat Trap, I Don't Like Mondays and Lookin' After Number One.

They join a line-up which also includes Billy Bragg and a host of other local and national acts.

The Rats will be Bob Geldof, Pete Briquette, Garry Roberts and Simon Crowe, who lives close to the festival site.

Formed in 1975 in Dublin, The Boomtown Rats played their first UK shows with the Ramones and Talking Heads and fought the punk wars alongside the Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Jam and The Stranglers.

They were one of the biggest bands of the late 70s and 80s, and their string of top ten hits and platinum albums earned them Brit Awards, Ivor Novellos and Grammy’s. They made history as the first Irish band to have a UK no 1 hit with Rat Trap.

Bob Geldof said: "The second I heard the name 'Shagstock' I knew that was THE festival for The Boomtown Rats.

"Only later when we agreed and signed contracts did Simon, the Rats drummer, point out it was in fact 'Chagstock', his local summer Music Fest. Oh well...

"I will do my best to personally attempt to do everything in my power to have the name revert to my far better original mistake.

"It’s a beautiful part of the world. Billy Bragg is a hero. The Rats are a great band. It will be a pleasure to do the Rat in Devon again."

Simon Ford from Chagstock Festival added: "We are delighted to announce The Boomtown Rats will exclusively headline our main stage at Chagstock.

"They are a classic band with a string of memorable hits. Combined with Billy Bragg’s performance immediately before the Boomtown Rats, Chagstock 2013 is shaping up to be our best line up ever - and we still have a number of major artists to announce! We can’t wait!”

Chagstock’s capacity is once again capped at just 5,000 tickets to ensure that its intimate, family-friendly atmosphere is maintained.

This year’s fancy dress theme will be ‘Circus’

“I wonder if Billy Bragg will play any of the songs he wrote in the 80's telling us all that if we kicked the Tories out that Labour would ensure that there were no more wars, that poverty would end and that we would all see a bright future of prosperity. He is probably a comedy act now.”

“Not sure what is worse, This rag trying desperately to gain some creditability or Devon having to listen to a band that was rubbish 30 years ago.

Wonder if instead of merchandise stands being outside, there will be undertakers.”

    “I have already Nicold.

So Sammy can sit at home trolling away on his own in his bedroom trying (and failing) to make everyone feel as bitter, cynical and disappointed with life as he does.

I will be in the beautiful countryside with friends and family listening to music I love, having a pint or two or more, and a really great time.

    I win.”

“There will be a break at around 4 in the afternoon so the performing acts can have their nap followed by tea and chocky biscuits.”
