Brothers' tor challenge
TWO intrepid trekkers are aiming to cover 65 Dartmoor tors in memory of their brother, who died last December at the age of 42.
Former soldier Clive Edwards was mentioned in Dispatches for his bravery and served in many of the world's war zones but was killed in a traffic accident in Lincoln.
As a tribute to the former Paignton College pupil, brothers Richard and Dave will tackle 120 miles of cross-country hardship next month.
They hope to raise hundreds of pounds for the charity Help for Heroes, which aids those wounded in Britain's current conflicts.
Dave, who lives in Torquay, said: "We will be using only current issue MoD equipment and rations, so no luxuries or tents.
"Neither my brother nor I are experienced hill walkers or particularly fit. We have 115 points of interest, such as the highest point in Devon and the oldest manmade structure on Dartmoor.
"There will also be a woodland reputedly patrolled by the devil and his whist hounds, plus a wide variety of bronze age settlements and stone circles, so it is impossible to put an accurate time scale on our venture."
The brothers, who both work at Paignton Zoo, have already begun their training, covering 12 miles every Sunday while wearing a full backpack.
Richard, who lives in Paignton, said: "We're not regular hikers, so we've never done anything like this before. The most walking we do is around the zoo.
"It'll be hard, and we think it'll take at least nine days, but it's also going to be fun in a way, because we're going to see parts of the moor that other people don't see.
"We're aiming to do about 20 miles a day, and we're dedicating it to Clive, although we're also using it to raise money for Help for Heroes, which is a very good cause.
"Clive was a devoted husband and loving father to his 15-year-old daughter."
Dave and Richard are aiming to begin their trek on March 21.
They have so far raised £160, but anyone else wanting to donate sponsorship can visit their website at www.justgiving.com/daveedwards1
