SOUTH Devon College Tennis Academy star Kendal Brown's unsinkable faith in her own ability saw her win a second triple crown of the year at the Clarity Copier Royal Port of Dartmouth Tennis Tournament at Coronation Park.

Winner of the British Colleges' title earlier this year, Kendal completed a superb treble at the Devon Senior County Closed at Torquay and she was to enjoy a hat-trick of trophies at Dartmouth.

In the ladies' singles, the 19-year-old followed up her semi-final defeat of Jackie Matthews 6-1, 6-2 to go on and beat Charlie Ramsdale 6-0, 6-1.

In the doubles, Kendal resumed her Torbay Open title winning partnership with Paignton schoolteacher and former Devon champion Kate Brown when they beat Rachael Jacobs and Madeline Ramsey 6-0, 6-0 in the final.

In the final of the mixed doubles, Kendal Brown teamed up with Torquay junior coach Kevin Durney to beat James Dillon and Maxine Cox 6-3, 6-2.

The men's title was won by Devon senior champion Bruce Wheatley (Exmouth) for the second time in three years after the Blundell's schoolmaster beat second seed Alfie Flatters (Devon) 6-0, 6-1.

In the quarter-finals, Wheatley beat Torquay's Skene Matthews 6-2, 6-1 and Kevin Durney also went down in the last eight, beaten by Flatters 6-1, 6-0.

The men's doubles was a triumph for fourth seeds Peter Odgers and Paul Sheaves after the long-time friends and doubles partners beat Simon Blatchford (Cornwall) and Alfie Flatters 6-2, 6-1 in the final.

In the semi-finals, Odgers and Sheaves had knocked out top seeds Steven Wood (Teignmouth) and Jonathan Clift (Hants) 6-4, 6-0.

Regatta regular Lawrence Webster (Torquay) beat John Brazier 6-1, 6-3 to reach the final of the Over-45 singles where he was give a walk-over by the injured Robert Still.

Brazier bounced back to capture the Over-60 vintage veterans' singles with victory over 70-year-old Mike McGrath.

The veteran men's doubles was won by John Brazier and Chris Robbillard (Totnes) over the scratch pairing of McGrath and Alexander Matthews 6-3, 7-5.

After winning the men's open singles consolation event, Robert Still partnered his daughter Anya to the semi-finals of the family doubles where they lost to Brixham tennis coach Graham Rickard and his son Bradley.

In the final, the Rickards beat Bruce Wheatley and his promising seven-year-old son, Ben.

The early part of the tournament was dogged by wind and rain but as the weather improved as the week went on, tournament referee Linda Hill (St Austell) had been able to catch up for a sunny finals day.

And an action-packed and full programme of events had all begun with Tom Riley completing a successful defence of his closed boys' 16-and-under title with victory over Stoke Fleming rival and friend Jamie Duthie 6-0, 6-4.

From thereon in a big crowd at Coronation Park witnessed some fine and exciting tennis where Paignton-based Torquay player Kendal Brown was to take centre stage and Dartmouth junior stars gave a glimpse of exciting times ahead for Regatta Tennis.
