In the Herald Express this week, police will be sending out 20,000 'Christmas cards' warning people about the dangers of leaving their properties unlocked and valuables on display.

Det Sgt Chris Tapley, of Torquay CID, said: "Here in Torbay crime department we will provide a dedicated burglary response unit which will be crewed from the November 19.

"This is a dedicated burglary car which will attend every incident of burglary and will be crewed by our specially trained officers."

He added: "The offence of dwelling burglary will be a priority for us.

"Burglary is a serious and invasive offence, which has a devastating impact on victims.

"It will be our aim to improve our customer service and to deliver a highly professional, timely response to members of the public reporting burglary.

"We will work actively with our partners and the community to roll out number initiatives over the coming month.

"These will include the targeting of known 'active' burglars and a crime prevention campaign led by neighbourhood officers aimed at promoting better household security.

"The message we are promoting is 'keep your windows and doors locked shut'.

A number of roadshows are planned across the Bay in December aimed at promoting better household security.
