Businesses delighted as Torquay town centre car park to become pay-on-exit
PLANS to introduce a pay on exit parking system in Lower Union Lane multi storey car park, Torquay have been given the go ahead following requests from the Town Centre's Company and local trader groups.
The work, totalling £150,000, will start in the Spring next year and will involve reconstruction of the main entrances and exits of the car park to provide for the introduction of a pay on foot barrier system and payment facilities.
Executive Lead for Safer Communities and Transport, which also includes parking in the Bay, Cllr Robert Excell, said: "This scheme is something that the local traders have been requesting for many years and I am delighted that the work has now been approved.
"The pay on exit system is more customer-friendly than the current pay and display method. Customers can stay in the car park for as long as they want without having to rush back to their vehicle before their time expires or having to worry about receiving a Penalty Charge Notice, as little enforcement is required.

"Pay on exit was successfully introduced in the Harbour car park, Torquay in 2009 and I am sure that the latest scheme will also prove to be hugely beneficial to the local businesses in the Torquay town centre area."
John Doherty from Dot's Pantry, Union Street, Torquay and Chairman of the Steering Group for Town Centres Company, said: "The agreement for a pay on exit system for Lower Union Lane car park is fantastic and will be a huge benefit to traders and our customers.
"Too often we have customers rushing out of the shop to get back to their car before their ticket runs out and asking for their coffee to be decanted into a paper cup.
"We want our customers to have a positive experience of visiting the town centre and in my view this is brilliant news."
Anyone with any queries about the scheme is invited to contact Torbay Council Parking Services on (01803) 207695.

“How do they intend to address the fact that there's no shops selling anything worth buying in Torquay? For god's sake, even Starbucks won't set up shop there.”

“Why were pay-on-entry car parks introduced at all? A ridiculous system and those responsible should foot the bill for the changeover. Why is only the Lower Union Lane car park being changed?”
