SOUTH Devon cycle racer Jon Tiernan-Locke followed up last week's win in the Tour Mediterraneen with another outstanding ride on the opening day of the Tour du Haut Var today.

The race, once again in the South of France, is spread over two days.

South Hams-based Locke, a member of the Mid Devon Cycle Club, rides for the British professional team Endura Racing.

He and team-mate Russell Downing were in a 12-man group at the head of the field heading for today's finish in La Croix Valmer.

While Romain Hardy and Clement Koretzky broke away to win the stage, Locke led the chasing group across the line to start tomorrow's final stage in third place, 10 seconds behind the two leaders.

Sunday's stage into Fayence finishes with a tough climb, which could favour noted climber Locke.
