Carols and cake on finish line for caper competitors

DON'T bother trying to enter Saturday's Cockington Caper – it sold out six weeks ago.

All 200 places on the annual charity run around the country park in Torquay were snapped up almost immediately they went on sale.

The Barnabas Sports Trust promotes the race to raise funds for its favourite causes. This year the cause is the East Devon Cystic Fibrosis Quality of Life Fund.

Torbay AC has taken 37 places in the race, which sets off from the cricket pavilion at 10.30am.

When runners return from the seven-and-half-mile slog through the mud, they will be greeted with Christmas cake and carols on the finish line.

Matt Day, project co-ordinator for Barnabas Sports Trust said: "We are looking forward to another successful year for the Cockington Caper and want to give a big thank you to local businesses who are already supporting us, Winners Gym, GB Personal Training, Total Produce and Pro-Performance Torbay."

SUNDAY'S combined Westward League and Devon Cross Country Championships at Exeter saw SDAC's Tris Sellors compete in his first external race after returning to training in August.

A top-class field of runners worked their way round 8,900 metres of undulating grassland and muddy tracks.

Sellors went off with the pace and settled into a determined effort as he covered the ups and downs of the four and a half laps

Digging in on the final lap, Tris gradually caught up with Torbay AC's Andy Longthorpe.

With a few hundred metres to go, a final effort saw Sellors overtake and hold off Longthorpe as they finished 60th and 61st.

El Taylor was the only lady Teignbridge Trotter at the Brookes Westward Cross-Country League meeting in Exetr and completed in 26.13 to finish 66th.

lan Boone brought the men home in 72nd and 36.47, John Crocker (111th) was next in 41.52 and Graeme Baker was 123rd in 47.59.

Torbay AC's Jon Parkinson was the club's first finisher at the Brooks Westward League Cross Country competition at Exeter, which included the Devon AA Championships.

Parkinson (MV45) finished in 29th position in 33 minutes dead with Dennis Doy (MV 60) 146th in 49.28.

A DAWLISH Coasters' contingent joined 500 other Father Christmases on Exeter Quay for the Santa Run in aid of holiday charity Dream-A-Way.

All competitors had to wear a Santa suit so a flurry of red and white was quite a sight. Winter got round in 28.16 and was 86th.

Lorna Richards ran the 5K in a time of 29.15 with Maria Trylska behind her in 34.42.

Pat Clatworthy and Corrie Crake jogged the fun run, for which no times were recorded.

Solitary Teignbridge Trotter Matt Winter took part in the Ironbridge Runner Exeter Santa 5k .
