A FORMER Bay-based TV actress who survived cancer is backing a campaign to raise £60,000 to improve breast cancer care at Torbay Hospital.

Rebekah Gibbs, 37, also known as BBC Casualty's Nina Farr, visited Torquay this weekend to show her support for improvements to treatment and waiting areas at the hospital's Breast Care Unit.

Rebekah was diagnosed with breast cancer aged 35 – just ten weeks after she gave birth to her daughter Gigi.

"It was quite literally the best and worse time of my life", she said.

Following her experience the former Cockington Primary School and Audley Park pupil went on to write her book, Because Of You, as well as a weekly diary detailing the highs and lows she went through.

Rebekah was shown around the Breast Care Unit by Mike Green, breast care consultant at Torbay Hospital.

Rebekah said: "Although I no longer live in the Bay I do have family and friends here in South Devon, some of whom have, or are presently attending the Breast Care Unit at Torbay Hospital.

"For many it is for routine screening but sadly for others it is, or has been, for treatment following the diagnosis of breast cancer.

"It is important that patients coming into hospital experience a pleasant and welcoming environment.

"Research has shown it can improve your sense of wellbeing at what can be a very difficult and stressful time.

"This is why I am throwing my whole-hearted support behind this campaign to raise donations to improve patient and waiting areas at the Breast Care Unit at Torbay Hospital, she added."

Mike Green said: "We are very grateful for Rebekah's collaboration. I would like to thank her and the patient volunteers for their ongoing support."

Rebekah will be compering the Breast Cancer Unit's Gala Charity Ball which is taking place on Saturday at the Riviera International Conference Centre, Torquay.

The black tie evening will start with drinks at 7pm, followed by a three-course meal, silent auction and then live music by the Mama Stone's House Band, the Exeter-based music venue owned by soul singer Joss Stone's mum.

Tickets are £38 per person. To buy tickets, or to make a donation to the silent auction, please contact Samantha on 07766 004800 or slindonemms@hotmail.co.uk
