Chant draws first blood with Allen Trophy win
THE TERRY Allen Trophy denotes the start of the playing season at the Warren, and first blood this year was drawn by Wayne Chant (writes Mike Davis).
Chant shot an excellent gross 75 (nett 66) to win by one shot from second-placed Nick Musgrove. Eddy Campbell was third with 69.
On Tuesday the club's veterans played a betterball stableford, where Alan Leach and Stuart Piper get the nod on countback from Cliff Down and Colin Ofield, both with 54 points.
Third, fourth and fifth was decided on countback too, with Mike Cockram and Mike Tothill taking third with 53 points.
Wednesday's strong easterly wind kept most of the scoring low for the midweek stableford.
Division One was won by Mike Davis with 34 points, two points clear of Adrian Henley.
In Division Two Barry Deveraux nicked first place by a point from Alan Patten with 37 points.
The captain's team took on the vice-captain's team on Thursday in the ladies' section.
The match was played as a singles matchplay format with the teams 'fairly drawn'. According to reports from some of the ladies' VC's team, the result did not really give a fair reflection of the competition, but the captain's team won the day 7-4.
