A PAIGNTON couple were filled with pride when four of their sons took part in a charity run in memory of another son who died suddenly from a heart condition.

John and Margo Salmon, from Ashburn Walk, were thrilled that their boys — Scott, aged 48, Chris, 52, Glen, 46, and Jeff, 42 — took part in the London 10K in memory of their brother Mick, who died aged 37 in 1995 from the heart condition hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, the biggest medical cause of sudden death in young people.

The quartet ran in the event to raise awareness and money for the Cardiomyopathy Association (CMA), a charity that provides information and support to people with the disease.

The brothers' wives and eight children, all wearing CMA T-shirts, were on the course cheering them on.

Mick, who worked in the entertainment industry and appeared fit and healthy, was on his way to a football match when he collapsed and died suddenly 13 years ago.

The brothers, two of whom regularly run against each other, decided to put competition aside so they could all compete in Sunday's run side by side.

Parents John, 74, and Margo, 77, who ran a B&B in Paignton until they retired in 2001, said: “It was an emotional day for the whole family.

“We were so pleased that the boys took part in the race together and raised awareness of this condition and more than £3,000 for the Cardiomyopathy Association.”

Cardiomyopathy usually develops in the teenage years or 20s but when found in time can usually be successfully treated.

The couple's other children — Steve, 53, Nikki, 50, and Sonja, 44 — are among the brothers' sponsors.
