A 14-YEAR-OLD Torquay chess enthusiast experienced the excitement of taking part in the national final of a challenge to find Britain's best young players.

John Fraser (pictured), who lives in Livermead and is a Year 10 pupil at Torquay Boys' Grammar School, took part in the UK Chess Challenge — the largest of its kind in the world involving some 10,000 children.

The tournament begins every spring term and continues over four stages and eight months.

John qualified at school and then went through to the Devon Mega Final, then won at the Giga Final. He was in the Tera Final for runners-up at Loughborough Grammar School, playing against some of the best in the country and came joint third.
