Children get close up and personal with nature
PAIGNTON Zoo is teaming up with nature study experts and a TV presenter to launch a new programme of events for young wildlife explorers.
The scheme is aimed at six to nine year olds and will include pond dipping and bug hunting, animal tracking, gardening and environmental enrichment.
A zoo spokesman said: "The aim is to encourage children to explore the living world around them, find out more about the wonders of nature and be inspired to join the next generation of conservationists."
The Young Zoo Explorers events will use products donated by Interplay, which supplies science and nature kits for children, which are designed to let them investigate the world around them and get up close and personal with bugs and beasties.
The zoo spokesman said the kits have won a gold award in this year's Good Toy Awards and were judged the best science product for children.
"It is a remarkable range which encourages children to embrace the great outdoors while gaining hands-on experience in scientific subjects such as botany and entomology in a fun and inspirational way."
TV naturalist Nick Baker helped to design the kits to give children the tools and information they need for proper scientific exploration.
The contents include specially-designed field equipment and instructions with loads of notes, hints and tips.
The first event is bug hunting on February 7 and 15.
Places are limited. To sign up contact the zoo.
