Retail magnate Chris Dawson has risen up the ranks of the 2012 Sunday Times Rich List after increasing his wealth by £76 million despite the recession.

The Plymouth-based owner and founder of The Range chain of home, leisure and garden stores is now worth £380 million and is placed at number 230 on the list, which is published tomorrow.

Mr Dawson has climbed 24 places on his 2011 ranking and is ranked in fifth place of the wealthiest individuals in Gloucester, Dorset, Somerset, Devon and Cornwall. The entrepreneur, who began his career as a market trader, is on course to open his 70th store by the end of the year.

He currently has a portfolio of 63 stores and employs 5,000 people across the UK, including 200 at the firm's Plymouth head office. In recent years he has diversified his business empire to include property, financial services, waste management, shop fitting and manufacturing.
