FROM the age of nine, Kingsteignton- based Christina Warn (pictured right) took a musical scholarship at Stover School in Newton Abbot and she followed that with studies at Wells Cathedral School.

In 2003, she won the Wendy Insole Cup for Singing and attained Grade 8 for Voice in March 2006.

Since then, Christina has been building an impressive portfolio of credits, including high profile concerts, masterclasses and leading roles in productions of My Fair Lady, the Beauty of Buttermere and The Matchgirls.

In more recent times, Christina has also been active on the talent trail front.

Earlier this year she entered the Torbay's Got Talent competition at the Babbacombe Theatre, and won through to the final six.

Now she is looking forward to this coming Saturday's Open Mic UK Regional Finals which are being held at St George's Concert Hall in Bristol.

The event starts at 4.45pm. So on behalf of all LoweDown readers … have a good one, Christina!

THERE'S an innovative new band on the block and they can be seen in action at the Upton Social Club in Torquay on Saturday evening.

As the name suggests the Covers Brothers' repertoire concentrates on cover versions of popular numbers from the 1950s to the present day.

Band spokesman Clayton Covers said: "We formed in June of this year and we have already received good reviews following hotel, pub and restaurant gigs in Dawlish and Teignmouth.

"The band's line-up features Max Covers on lead and rhythm guitar; Mut Covers on percussion and vocals; Leroy Covers on bass and vocals, and myself on rhythm guitar and vocals.

"The Covers Brothers musical style is very much mid-50s and 60s in flavour, including early Elvis, Bobby Darin and Chuck Berry, through to The Beatles, Kinks, Clapton and Quo.

"We achieve this with just acoustic guitars and minimum amplification.

"What is unique, however, is our drummer plays a simple cajon. This is essentially a wooden percussion box from which the player can get remarkable rhythms."

The Covers Brothers sound is perfect for weddings, hotels, restaurants, pubs and social clubs. In fact any occasion calling for a mellow and relaxed, mainly acoustic, performance with just the occasional electric burst, is the ideal Covers Brothers setting.

A DOUBLE dose of Halloween is on the cards at Ryan's Bar in Abbey Road, Torquay this weekend.

Indeed, the Halloween festivities start tomorrow evening with Halloween Party No.1 which is being staged as a Black Top Promotions multi-band event featuring Rat Attack, plus Holly Moments, Dead in the Day, Cachexic and Prom for Sharks.

In similar vein (no pun intended), Saturday evening's Halloween Party No. 2 features the band Destruction Preventor.

ON Friday, November 6, at 8pm, the Little Theatre in Meadfoot, Torquay is to be the setting for a return by public demand of the Devon-based 17-piece outfit AJs Big Band.
