Businesses in a Westcountry resort got a boost when a cruise ship carrying around 800 passengers stopped off for a day.

Roger Stringer, chairman of Torbay Council, officially greeted German passengers coming off the Artania at the weekend. Torbay's directly elected mayor, Gordon Oliver, has been publicly criticised for focusing too heavily on attracting cruise ships instead of concentrating on wider job creation.

But Councillor Stringer said it was the third ship to have visited in a year, bringing up to 4,000 people ashore to explore the sights.

"The more people we can encourage to visit the harbour, the more money they will spend and the better it is for the local economy," he said.
