A CHAIN of travel agents has ceased trading with the closure of three South Devon branches and the loss of up to 20 jobs.

Customers who have booked holidays with Vacation World in Torquay, Paignton and Brixham are being told their tickets and holidays are safe.

The company has been taken over by Hays Travel in Sunderland which is promising customers that it will honour all holiday bookings.

A total of 55 jobs have been lost with the closure of the chain of 14 travel agencies across the West Country.

The Dartmouth branch has been taken over by its manager and is continuing to trade as the Dartmouth Travel Company.

Shocked staff had gone into Vacation World offices as normal last week only to be told the company had ceased trading.

An emotional message to customers was posted in the window of the Fore Street, St Marychurch, branch of Vacation World by staff.

It reads: "Sadly Vacation World ceased trading on Wednesday, May 16 closing all their branches and making all staff redundant.

"This has come as a great shock to us all and totally without warning. We would like to apologise for all the inconvenience and upset that this causes."

Barbara Blackshaw, of Hays Travel, confirmed that more than 55 jobs had been lost but said they hoped some of the Torbay agents may become personal travel consultants, working from home.

"We are trying to support the staff as best we can," she said.
