Dave Stacey, of the Torbay Amateur Boxing Club, said his lifelong friend was a 'great character' whose support of the club had ensured its future.
"He was a lovely man who could not do enough for you. He always backed boxing, and was responsible for getting a lot of kids off the street," he said.
He added: "Nothing was too much trouble for him. He had time for everyone — and always helped the club. We are so grateful for what he did."
An inquest into the death opened in Torquay on Friday.
South Devon coroner Ian Arrow was told that company director Mr Mazdon, of St Edmunds Road, Plainmoor, was found in the firm's showroom late on the night of June 22.
A post mortem examination confirmed he died by hanging.
Coroner's officer Ric Parsons said: "Notes have been found. There are no suspicious circumstances."
Formal identity was carried out by funeral director Kevin Lack who had known Mr Mazdon for nine years.
A full inquest will be held at a later date.
