TORBAY councillor Alison Hernandez has pledged her support to the Herald Express loveLIFE campaign — but donning her roller skates for the cause is one step too far.

The Conservative councillor for Shiphay with The Willows has vowed to run more miles as part of the healthier lifestyle campaign.

Mrs Hernandez (pictured), the executive lead for involved and healthy communities, said she would take part in longer distance races throughout the year and include her mileage from her usual 10-mile races to 15 miles.

Mrs Hernandez said she would also try to lose weight but drew the line at roller skating.

She said: "I've just taken up the sport. I'm too new to it. I'm a total novice. It has to be something I can incorporate easily in my lifestyle. I pledge to walk more and take part in 15-mile races.

"I'll leave roller skating to next year."

Mrs Hernandez said she had taken the loveLIFE campaign message to schools around the Bay and had received an amazing response from students.

She added: "I've visited Churston Ferrers Grammar School and talked to them about the campaign.

"They all made some pledges. I told them about my own pledges.

"I would like to go back to the school on a regular basis.

"I need to find someone to hold me to account. I can check on them too."

She added: "The loveLIFE campaign is a great opportunity to get everyone thinking about their health and what they can do to improve it.

"I'm pleased to see the Herald Express go big on it.

"It ties quite nicely with the Olympics, too."
