COUNTBACK was called upon to separate the top three teams in the second event of The Warren's Ladies' Centenary (

The VIP competition saw a Dawlish member partner ladies' captains and vice-captains from other Devon clubs.

The top three all ended on 117 points, with Devon ladies' captain Sue Persey, Warren captain Gina Redman and Jean Dyer emerging victorious.

Faye Pannell and Caroline Baker from Bigbury, playing with Sue Broderick, were second, while third place was occupied by Linda Ellis and Dot Butler from Exeter, along with Lesley Turpin.

The Warren's ladies now move along to their Tee Party event next week, before the festivities close with the Centenary Trophy and Champagne Prizegiving on July 5.

The veterans played a 4BBB on Tuesday. Regular winner Chris Swain picked up another title as he partnered Dick Hammett to a two-shot victory with 42 points.

Runners-up were Bill Eaton and Peter Cupit, ahead of three groups on 39 points, of whom Tony Sluman and Trevor King were the best on countback.

The Wednesday Stableford was again affected by heavy rain, but this did not stop Ed Heemskerk from recording the day's best score with 39 points in Division Two, which was good enough for a two-shot victory over Jimmy Garside and Dan Green.

In Division One, Rob Williams took the win with 38 points, one better than Simon Coleman, with Keith Brimson in third.

The Men's Mail on Sunday team played their fifth-round match at home on Friday against Long Sutton.

Home advantage proved crucial in the end, as good wins by Colin Papworth, Marcus Dove, and anchorman Chris McGill were enough to see the team through.

Captain's Day was a Play the Course Backwards team event, in aid of captain Mike Bailey's nominated charities for the year, Dawlish League of Friends and Dawlish Disability Transport (Bert's Bus).

With golf balls flying all over the course in strange directions, a good time was had by all, especially the team of Phill Ashcroft, Ian McGill, Chris McGill and Aaron Robertson, who came out on top with 92 points.

Following closely behind were Mark and Matt Commins, Mark Crocker and Iain Reynolds, with Rod Sampson, Howard Thorp, Tim Bradshaw and Dave Watson a further point adrift.

The prize-giving for the first half of the year followed the competition.

Eight trophies were handed out by the captain to the successful golfers – special mention goes to Matt Commins who has won two events already this year in reducing his handicap from 18 to 12.
