Cousins gets his year off to a good start at Newton

NEWTON ABBOT Fishing Association's first Saturday Open match of the year on Bradley last weekend, resulted in a win for Mark Cousins (on Peg 22) with skimmers, roach and perch on groundbait feeder for 4k 250g.

Second was Gary Webber (on Peg 10) with all roach on the pole for 2k 840g. Third was Rick Johnston (on Peg 6) with a similar catch for 2k 780g and fourth was Zac Newton (on Peg 9) with 2k 700g which included a fine perch of 1k 300g.

NEWTON ABBOT based 'Team Tackle Trader' moved to the top of the Devon Winter League during the latest round on Stafford Moor Fishery.

Tackle Trader's Phil Coles won the match individually with 109lb of carp from Peg 1 on 'Tanners Lake'. He was backed up by Sam Powell, Jamie Pearce and Dave Wykes to finish second on the day and put themselves one point clear at the top of the league with two rounds to go, both at Milemead Fishery.

NAFA. members have reported some good catches over the past week, mainly due to the continued mild weather. Harry Workman fished Sawmills and banked two carp, both commons, weighing 23lb and 14lb.

At Rackerhayes, Dores has produced the odd specimen carp, as well as bream to 8lb. Odd carp to l6lb can be found in Island Pond on boilies or sweetcorn.

CHANGEABLE weather conditions saw anglers testing different baits to attract the fish at Town Parks Fishery this week.

Baits that produced good bags one day failed to get a bite the next!

The Match Lake, in particular fished better for anglers who did their watercraft and varied baits.

Brian Roberts moved around the lake during a day session and managed to attract Carp to the 9lbs mark on various baits although sweet corn did particularly well.

Roach are still up in the water with junior anglers using whips taking fish on maggot to 2lbs.

Bream have been a little elusive with only a few catches reported.

On the lower Specimen Lake fishing proved testing although many anglers reported fish moving around most pegs.

Dave Pierce did manage to bank a Carp after numerous runs throughout a night session.

The Common tipped the scales at 19lbs 9oz and fell for a white chocolate boilie offered mid water from peg 14.

Catfish are still moving around with Steve Roberts fighting one, described as 'very large' all the way to the net only to lose the fish as it pulled the hook!

A large 30mm mixed flavour boilie proved irresistible!

Some very large Roach have been banked by various day anglers targeting Silvers around the lake. Castor and maggot continue to be the best bait although some fish have taken small hookable pellets!

JUST a few anglers braved the weather this week at Emperor Lakes.

Four captures were reported on the season ticket lake. Dave Pierce took a mirror of 32.14 and Nigel Edgecombe had a 24.10 mirror. Dave Lande had a very nice double with commons of 32.01 and a beautiful, long, lean fish of 34.10, a new PB.

The day ticket lake produced a few more fish this week, including unexpected captures of catfish and tench. Dave Wood took a catfish of 44.08 plus a mirror carp of 18.05 and Pete Elbourn had a sturgeon of 35.08, plus commons of 18.05 and 11.11. Kev Lock landed a common of 16.05, Alan Deacon took a mirror of 17.04, and Jamie Everard had tench of 4.08 and 6.08, plus a couple of pike, although weights weren't recorded.

Three anglers on the now fully operational mixed coarse fish pool this week, caught good bags of mixed fish, including roach to 1.08 and carp to 3lbs. Call Paul on 07814 060147 to book in for fishing.

A reminder of the work parties on Saturday January 28-29, beginning at 9am. Any help from members will be greatly appreciated, and those on the waiting list are more than welcome. It's an ideal situation for them to get to know current members.

THE fishing has been quite challenging over recent days at Southview Farm but most anglers have managed a carp or two.

Willow pool gave Keith Ellis of Brixham a mirror carp of 11lb. 14oz. on pop up boilie.

Stephen Hird of Newton Abbot had nine carp to 10lb on legered sweetcorn over pellet and his son, Michael, had three carp to 9lb on boilie.

Kingfisher pool gave Fred Smythe four carp to 7lb on legered pellet.
