He last played the venue as a solo artist in the late 1990s and it was clear to see his fans were happy to have him back in Devon for a night of Take That hits, an upbeat swing section and some solo offerings for good measure.

The lively crowd loved every minute of the performance and were on their feet singing and dancing from the first song, Take That's Greatest Day.

The two hours which followed were a romp through some classic pop tracks and stunning ballads.

Included in the mix were Pray, The Flood, Patience, Rule The World and the Take That anthem Never Forget.

It was also great to see he'd included lesser known album tracks by the boy band, including Wasting My Time, Reach Out and Sunday to Saturday.

Fans of his solo material also weren't disappointed as he also performed his first solo single, Forever Love, on a grand piano to rapturous applause as well as songs Lie to Me and Open Road.

Surprises on the set list included Sing, the track he wrote for the Queen's diamond jubilee which topped the charts earlier this year.

Also a crowd pleaser when he whipped the audience into a frenzy by belting out the Robbie Williams track Candy, which he wrote, complete with brightly coloured delectable sweets projected on to a video backdrop.

Throughout the show, Gary, who is currently a head judge on ITV show the X Factor, was flanked by his live band, who really added to the performance. It was clear to see he has a great camaraderie with his musicians, as he's worked with them all for many years.

He also showed his humorous side- joking about his dancing skills and laughing that his next album will be titled "Swing when your thinning" referring to his hair balding and a jibe at band mate Robbie William's album "Swing when your Winning".

During the night Gary said he'd be back soon... let's hope he keeps to that promise as there's no doubt he'd sell out the venue night after night.

With smooth vocals, a fun side, rugged good looks and the ability to work an audience, Captain Barlow, as he's known by his fans, really does have the X Factor.
