A CHEESE shop has opened in Torquay specialising in the best of South Devon production.

After spending more than 25 years within the home improvement industry, Phil Coyle decided to start up a online Devon cheese business.

It was so successful that Mr Coyle (pictured) has now opened up The Cheese Press in St Marychurch.

He said: "I was born and bred in Devon, my father was born in Stokeinteignhead, and my great grandfather and grandmother had a farm in Combeinteignhead and a butchers shop in St Marychurch.

"Having had some success with the online business, I decided to look for a shop premises in St Marychurch where my family had previously traded for many years and I have now secured a shop opposite the church.

"We have wonderful countryside here in Devon for dairy products. Who hasn't heard of Devonshire clotted cream? And over the past number of years we have developed unrivalled cheesemakers, many of them I have had the pleasure of visiting to see their process for myself.

"Since I decided to open a shop, I was amazed to find other wonderful local products to accompany the fine cheeses, including local preserves, apple juices, pate, organic free range cooked meats, charcuterie and more. I am always looking to source new local producers no matter how small they are.

"On opening day, I was overwhelmed by the amount of custom I had, queuing out the door on a couple of occasions, and good wishes from the customers.

"The interest shown has continued during the first weeks of trading with repeat customers and new faces turning up on a daily basis. I would like to thank all who have visited and look forward to their continued support."
