IT is estimated that there are currently around 17,000 potholes in Devon's roads waiting to be filled.

But it could be worse. Motorists in Devon fare far better than those in the north of the country when it comes to potholes.

In fact, Devon's drivers are among the least likely to suffer suspension failure, according to a recent league table.

The failure rate was 3.46 per cent in Devon, with only Somerset and East Sussex recording a lower rate in a table of 52 counties.

Motorists in Scotland and the North of England are up to three times as likely to damage their cars on poorly maintained, potholed roads, according to campaign website, Potholes.co.uk.

Automotive warranty specialist, Warranty Direct, analysed data from more than 50,000 live consumer policies over four years and found that the 10 regions of the UK in which suspension failure is most prevalent are all at the top of the UK, with North Yorkshire being the furthest south.

Overall, UK drivers pay out more than £1 million a day to repair axle and suspension parts on their cars, thanks largely to the legacy of years of underinvestment in road maintenance.

With an average repair cost of £257, axle and suspension faults are the most common suffered by British motorists, the reason for one in five visits to a workshop every year.

The winter has already seen some of the worst road conditions in recent history. Potholes.co.uk has seen a sharp increase in visitor numbers since December. In the last three months, more drivers have reported damage than in the same period in any of the last three years and, with 'pothole season' expected to last until April, more misery is yet to come.

The best places to avoid pothole perils are mostly in the South, with Somerset, Devon, Dorset and Hampshire all among the safest regions.
