A DEAF man was robbed of his mobile phone and wallet by two men in Newton Abbot.

The 43-year-old victim was confronted by the pair moments after leaving a town centre fish and chip shop on Wednesday night.

Police have appealed for information in the hope they can track down the offenders.

The man, who was uninjured in the incident, and his attackers had been in the Torbay Fish Buffet in Market Street just before the incident at 10pm.

It is unclear if the duo had tried to communicate with the man.

All three are later seen on CCTV walking past the farmers' market.

They then crossed Halcyon Road and passed down an alleyway linking Halcyon Road with Fisher Road, which is where the crime was committed.

It is believed the victim raised the alarm by writing a note and handing it to people in a local pub.

Police are today due to interview the victim with the help of a sign language expert.

They have also issued an appeal for a woman who could provide crucial information about the suspects.

Teignbridge Det Sgt Alex Dawson said: "Shortly before the incident, at around 9.30pm, the men were seen walking down Union Street and one of the suspects speaks to a female.

"We want to speak to that woman. We are not sure what was said but she could help with our inquiry."

A staff member at the fish and chip shop said: "I didn't see anything, but I gave a statement to police yesterday about the poor chap."

Anyone with information should call Newton Abbot CID on 08452 777 4444 quoting crime reference number 954 of December 10.
