Mr Parsons was in court to answer a charge of religiously aggravated harassment.

It was said that on March 25 last year he displayed some writing, sign or other visible representation which was threatening, abusive or insulting within the hearing or sight of a person likely to be caused harassment alarm or distress, and the offence was religiously aggravated.

It is alleged Mr Parsons was handing out leaflets about the influence of Sharia law in the UK.

He had pleaded not guilty and was standing trial at the time of his collapse.

Mr Parsons, of Leighon Road, was a widower who was born in Paignton, but spent much of his working life in Kent.He had no surviving blood relatives but had relations through his marriage living in Wales.

The Torbay coroner's office was informed of Mr Parson's death but there will be no inquest as he died of natural causes.

“Ziggyblue - you can only be cautioned if you are prepared to accept the caution - i.e. admit to what you did to the police. If anyone is adamant they didn't do something (or feel they have not committed an offence), they cannot be cautioned.”

“It's a pity that the police and the judiciary cannot be prosecuted for bringing harassment, alarm and distress on Mr Parsons. You'd think the authorities would check up on his health before doing what they did. But not, it seems, unless you're a senior politician or an internationally-known figure..”

“When somebody tries to raise legitimate concerns on a subject such as this and is prosecuted for doing so, it is obvious that political correctness has taken a step too far, and that freedom of speech in this country is dead.”

“What on earth is an 82 yr old doing in court on such a charge. Couldn´t he just have been cautioned.”
