THE FESTIVE season is at an end, and with it so is the traditional overindulging. Many Devonians, like me, will have this week glumly looked at the scales in both disbelief and despair.

But it's not all doom and gloom though, as the region has a number of promotional January offers and innovative ways for us all to get fit again, with just a few of the more 'inventive' ideas below.

  1. netball

Nordic Walking  - using specially designed Nordic Walking poles you work all of the major muscles in the body, without putting unnecessary strain on your joints. Free taster sessions are available at Haldon Forest Park (Sat 5th Jan, 10am and Thurs 17th Jan, 1.30pm), Dawlish Warren Nature Reserve (Mon 7th Jan, 10am), National Trust Killerton, Broadclyst (Sun 13th Jan, 10am), and at University of Exeter Sports Park (Wed 23rd Jan, 5.30pm).

Kettlercise – a unique type of exercise which only uses one piece of equipment - a Kettlebell – which resembles an old style kettle. It is designed to work every muscle in your body whilst burning fat. Torbay Kettlercise Classes can be found every Tuesday and Thursday, 6 - 7pm, at Paignton's Preston Baptist Church or at Torquay TLH Leisure Resort's Aztec Gym every Friday and Saturday morning from 9.30am.

Fit Camps - A number of fit clubs and camps also have promotional offers this month, Devon Fit Camp, at South Devon Tennis Club in Ivybridge, are even organising a charity chocolate amnesty for all those leftover chocolates that you just can't bring yourself to eat anymore. Fighting Fit Devon Bootcamp, in Totnes, is offering a free introductory session at Longmarsh car park on the morning of Saturday 12th January.

Running Clubs - Torbay Athletic Club takes beginners for winter training sessions at Torquay's Rivera Centre on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, and are offering half price memberships to new members this month, with the first session free.

South Devon Athletic Club meets on Thursday evenings at 7pm at Torbay Leisure Centre, Clennon Valley, Paignton and also welcomes runners of all abilities.

The Exeter City FC running club is open to runners of all levels of fitness and are offering courses run in blocks of 10 weeks at £2 per session; the first meeting is at St James' Park on Thursday January 10th at 6.30pm. For more information contact Jamie Vittles on 01392 255611 or via email at jamie.vittles@exetercityfc.co.uk.

There are of course hundreds of different local exercise and fitness classes - at various gyms and venues across the region - that may take just fancy this January, including Street Dance and Cheerleading at Torbay Leisure Centre, Clennon Valley, Paignton, Zumba and Bokwa at Torquay TLH Leisure Resort's Aztec Gym, Boxercise and Karate at the Riviera International Conference Centre or Aquafit and the festive favourite Thighs, Bums and Tums at Newton Abbot Leisure Centre. But South Devon College in Paignton are also offering short courses to help get us back into shape, such as Aqua Aerobics, Chair-based Exercise for the Older Person, Pilates and Tai Chi.

If you have any other ideas on how to regain that pre-Christmas figure, or have seen an interesting fitness class advertised locally yourself, please feel free to share them with us, by commenting below. I can feel the calories burning off just thinking about it…
