This year why not try a diet that's good for you, good for animals and good for the planet? That's the question Exeter Friends For Animals will be asking when they invite the public to take the Devon Vegan Pledge in March 2012.

The Pledge (which is completely free-of-charge) is being organised by the group as part of its campaign to promote a more compassionate, cruelty-free lifestyle, and was inspired by similar initiatives around the country. The aim is to provide help and guidance to anyone thinking of trying an animal-free diet, for whatever reason: whether to reduce animal suffering, improve their health or reduce their carbon footprint - or indeed all three.

Pledgers undertake to follow a vegan diet for one month, and attend a workshop at the beginning and end of the month consisting of talks, discussions, nutritional advice from a registered dietician, cookery demonstrations - and of course, a delicious vegan lunch (after all, eating is believing!) They will also be assigned a vegan "buddy" who they can contact with any queries or problems. Burning questions such as "How do I know I'm getting a balanced diet?", "Where can I buy the things I need?", "How do I make a cake without eggs?" and "What about going out for meals?" will all be answered!

During the month, there will also be a couple of social events including a potluck supper, where pledgers can get together and compare notes.

One EFFA member who recently took the Vegan Pledge while living in London says: "It was so much easier than I thought it would be. I also learnt a lot about nutrition in the process, and really enjoyed the workshops. Especially the cake! I would thoroughly recommend it".

I live on beans, legumes, vegetables, fruits... I drink a protein supplement every morning, no dairy, I drink almond milk mixed in with fruit, and a protein powder."

    I did it because after I had this stent put in, I realized that even though it happens quite often that after bypass surgery you lose the veins because they're thinner and weaker than arteries, the truth is that it clogged up, which means that the cholesterol was still causing buildup in my vein that was part of my bypass.
    I didn't want it to happen again. So I did all this research and it says that 82% of the people since 1986 who have gone on a plant-based, no dairy, no meat of any kind diet,82% of the people who have done that have begun to heal themselves. Their arterial blockage cleans up, the calcium deposit around their heart breaks up.

    Bill Clinton has apparently made a courageous decision to pursue a plant-based diet and thereby save his own life. Notably, such a move would have been impossible during his presidency due to a strong political backlash from the dairy and meat industries who continue to push their disease-promoting foods on the population.
    There are simply too many vested interests in disease and pharmaceuticals to make such a move politically viable.”

    As the kitchen filled with the smell of caramelised meat, my mouth watered in anticipation of the coming feast: a thick cut of tender steak, fried in butter and olive oil.
    This was not a regular treat. In fact, for the previous 26 years I'd been a vegan, eschewing not just meat but all animal products.
    According to government advice, I was doing everything right — and yet my health had never been worse. My weight had crept up over the years, until in 2008 I was 14½ stone — which is a lot of blubber for someone who is 5ft 10in — and was classified as clinically obese. I waddled around, sweating and short of breath, battling extremely high cholesterol and suffering from chronic indigestion. I was always tired and needed to take naps every afternoon. I had constant headaches and swallowed paracetamol and sucked Rennies like they were sweets.
    Worst of all, I had irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), which left me feeling as if I had lead weights in my gut. My belly was bloated and distended after every meal. I was, to use a technical term, knackered.But that was about to change. In 2010, I decided to give up my supposedly healthy lifestyle and embrace good old-fashioned meat.
    Twenty-four hours after eating meat again, all my IBS symptoms had gone. As the weeks and months passed, every aspect of my health improved dramatically. I became leaner, shedding body fat and becoming stronger and fitter. My headaches went away, never to return. Even my libido increased.It felt like being young again, like coming back to life.
    But though I felt energised, I was also furious Furious with myself for sticking to the 'healthy' eating advice, which was actually far from a sensible diet. But also furious with the so-called experts who have been peddling this low-fat, high-carbohydrate claptrap for so long that no one thinks to question it.”

    Chocolate Cake
    Ingredients

    2 cups all purpose flour
    1 ½ cups white sugar
    1 ½ teaspoon baking powder
    ½ teaspoon salt
    1 teaspoon baking soda
    ¾ cup vegan margarine (softened)
    ½ cup unsweetened applesauce
    1 ½ cups soy milk
    1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    ¾ cup cocoa powder

    Butter-cream Icing

    1 cup vegan margarine (softened)
    3 cups sifted icing sugar
    2 teaspoons vanilla
    1-2 tablespoons soy milk
    Red food coloring

    Directions

    Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease and flour 2 9" round cake pans.

    Sift the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt and cocoa powder together and set aside.

    Cream the margarine and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the applesauce and vanilla and mix well. Slowly mix in the flour, alternating with the soy milk. Continue to mix until well combined.

    Pour an equal amount of batter into the 2 cake pans. Bake for 30-40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the centre comes out clean.

    Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for about 10 minutes and then gently invert them onto wire cooling racks.

    To make the icing, beat margarine for about 30 seconds. Continue beating, adding the icing sugar ½ cup at a time. Beat on low speed till smooth. Add the vanilla and soy milk and beat again.

    Ice when the cakes are completely cool”
