DIVERS were called in to carry out further repairs to Torquay's promenade ahead of more refurbishment work scheduled for the autumn.

The work on columns underwater at Princess Promenade could not be carried out until phase one of the promenade repairs were complete, according to Torbay Council.

Phase two of the promenade refurbishment, which will include the demolition of the upper section of the banjo, is hoped to start in the autumn.

A Torbay Council spokesman said: "Divers employed by contractors working on behalf of the council have recently carried out some minor work to columns that was required in relation to the western end of the Princess Promenade between the theatre and the banjo.

"We had to wait until the recent improvement scheme to the eastern end of the promenade was finished before this work could be carried out."

Torbay Council says the work will extend the life of the Princess Promenade for at least 25 years.

It was decided at a full council meeting in July to spend in total £2.1million of public funds on the second phase of the scheme.

A contract to complete phase two of works for the banjo structure and the eastern promenade will now be put out to tender.
