THE exceptionally damp December left Torbay with some record rainfall figures, double the average.

Herald Express weatherman Ernest Freed reported that although there were 13 days without any rainfall during the month, it was made up by some record falls.

The total rainfall was 275mm (10.8 ins) compared with 84.7mm (3.5 ins) last year and the average of 108mm (4.3 ins).

There were ten days with no sunshine at all, but still sunshine levels held up on the other days. Despite that the Bay was the sunniest place in the UK on three days.

The sunshine total was 88.1 hours ( an average of 2.8 per day) compared with 83.5 hours last year and the long term average of 58.6 hours.

The average maximum temperature was 9.3C (49F), compared with 9C (48F) last year and the average of 9.5C (49F).

Overnight temperatures averaged 3.6C ( 37F), compared with 5.9C (42F) and the long term figure of 5.3C (41F). On three nights temperatures were below 0C.

Window smash witness appeal

POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a shop window was smashed in Torquay.

The incident happened between 2.30am and 3.30am on Sunday, December 30.

The window of the Attika clothes shop in Abbey Road was damaged.

Police believe it may have been the result of a fight in the street. Nothing was stolen.
