SKI racer Cameron Thomas won two gold medals and championship titles in the U15 category at Pontypool in Wales.

Thomas, who is 13 and attends Brixham College, produced four excellent runs on technical courses over consecutive days at the Welsh National Championships and Welsh Open Championships.

With top-seeded racers attending from all around the country, the courses were never going to be for the faint-hearted and resulted in several spectacular crashes and racers not completing their runs.

Thomas, who trains at Torquay Alpine Ski Club, kept his cool, winning the Welsh National event by nearly 1.5 seconds over the second-placed racer in his age group.

It was in the Welsh Open the following day that Thomas had his best result. Up against one of his closest rivals, who fell in the first run, Thomas went from strength to strength.

He finished eighth overall in the males category, despite of losing a ski pole at the start of his second run.

Thomas won his age category by more than two seconds. He also beat the second and third- placed male in the JN1 (U-17) category and the third-placed male in the JN2 (U-19) category.

"It was a really exciting weekend of racing and to end with a top-ten place overall was a great result", said Cameron's mum Jill.

Nigel Simmons, chairman of the TASC junior race section, said: "Cameron thoroughly deserves his success as he's been consistently one of the top-ranked U15 artificial slope racers throughout the summer.

"He has been hard on the heels of several of the British Children's team and if he can get the funding to compete on snow over the winter he's got a great chance of flying the flag for Torbay abroad."

Also racing in TASC colours were Kerry Thomas (U-17s) and Matthew Lugger (U-17s), with Lugger securing a commendable fourth place in the Open.

Thomas, currently ranked third in the UK on artificial Qsurfaces, is now looking ahead to the Irish Championships in Dublin over the coming weeks, before winter training begins in earnest.

"We are still looking for a financial sponsor to help with the costs of Cameron's future training on snow as part of a steady development programme," said Jill Thomas.
