A crash investigation is ongoing and the exact causes of the accident will not be known for some weeks.
But what is clear is that the driver of the Ford Fiesta smashed through several barriers on the bridge above Edginswell Lane and landed on the banking by the roadside below.
The car landed nose first and the force of impact was such that parts of the vehicle were found 20 metres away.
A £25,000 scheme to repair the barriers has started.
The busy road was closed between the palm tree roundabout at Kerswell Gardens and the Gallows Gate roundabout for almost 12 hours following the incident.
Anyone with information about the incident, which happened at about 5am, should call police on 101.
