A MAN is critical in hospital following a crash which left one of Torquay's main roads closed off for almost 12 hours.

Police have confirmed that a local man remains in hospital in Derriford Hospital in Plymouth following the Hamelin Way crash in the early hours of Saturday February 16.

The single car smash happened at 5am near the overpass between the roundabouts at Kerswell Gardens, where the controversial palm tree stands and Gallows Gate, in Torquay.

The incident saw the Torbay ring road closed off from 5am until after 2pm while highways engineers from Torbay Council carried out checks to the overpass bridge.

It is understood the incident caused structural damages to the road which is why the busy artery, which serves Paignton and Brixham and other towns in and out of the Bay, had to be shut.

Meanwhile, a police spokesman has confirmed that the driver of the Ford Fiesta involved in the smash was first taken to Torbay Hospital only to be transferred to Derriford later because of the gravity of his injuries.

The spokesman said: "A man local to the Torbay area remains critical but stable in hospital at this stage.

"Hamelin Way has now been reopened. It was reopened at 2.05pm. We understand this is an important road in and out of Torbay but structural investigations to the road had to be carried out following the single vehicle collision at 5am."
