SPEEDING motorists were told about the consequences of their actions by Bovey Tracey schoolchildren.

Pupils from the town's primary school went out with police for a crackdown on speed limits.

The stop-check involved pupils using a speed-gun while police officers stopped drivers suspected of going over the speed limits on Le Molay-Littry Way.

The initiative has been carried out elsewhere in Teignbridge to great effect.

Children spoke to motorists, asking questions about whether they had thought about the consequences if they hit a small child.

Sergeant Ian Stevens said: "It was a very worthwhile exercise. The children were with police for an hour-and-a-half.

"We identified six vehicles that were speeding and the children asked them questions, with the final one being 'how would you feel if you knocked me over?'

"While we didn't issue any fixed penalty notices to those stopped, we feel it was a success because it makes people stop and think.

"We have carried out similar operations elsewhere and they can be useful. Most motorists would prefer to face questions from children, rather than a £60 fine."
