Dylan gets his big break in serious West End drama
A SOUTH Devon actor has landed a role alongside one of the stars of an award-winning American TV crime show.
Torquay-born Dylan Turner is appearing with The Wire's Dominic West in London's West End.
For former Torquay Boys' Grammar School pupil Dylan, the role in Life Is A Dream is a deliberate move away from the world of musical theatre which has seen him star in shows Mama Mia, Chicago, Grease, Sweet Charity and Footloose.
"I made the decision to leave musical theatre at the end of my last contract, High School Musical, because I wanted to pursue purely an acting career," he said.
"I'm initially an actor who can sing and dance, but it's difficult to convince casting directors to see you as sometimes they feel you are 'too musical theatre'.
"There are so many actors out there, that the only way for them is to pigeonhole you."
His tenacity has paid off and currently Dylan is appearing alongside Dominic West in Life Is A Dream at The Donmar Warehouse.
"I am so grateful I have been given this chance to prove myself as a serious actor and hopefully I will be given more opportunities for more straight acting roles in the future," said Dylan, who also appeared in the movie Mamma Mia with Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth and Julie Walters.
He added: "To work at the Donmar has been on my list of goals and I'm thrilled to be there."
Dylan grew up in Torquay and his talents were nurtured in local productions including appearances at the Babbacombe Theatre.
This current play is directed by Jonathan Munby.
Dylan said: "He's a name to watch out for I'm sure.
"He's fantastic, so passionate about his work and his vision is extraordinary."
Sam Mendes, director of American Beauty, used to be the resident artistic director of the Donmar, but now it is Michael Grandage.
