CRICKET: Former England wicketkeeper Chris Read handed out the prizes at former club Paignton's annual dinner and awards night.

Read, now captain of Nottinghamshire, played in 15 Tests and 36 one-day internationals between 1999-2007. His career started as a schoolboy on the 3rd XI pitch at Queens Park.

Paignton invited Read down to speak at their annual bash, this year held at Churston Golf Club. One of his first presentation jobs was to hand out the A Division champions' trophy and individual medals to 1st XI captain Mike Pedley and his players for their success last summer.

The 1st XI player of year went to seam bowler Stephen George for his haul of 44 wickets. George Benton was the 2nd XI player of the year. Micheal Meech, who topped his division's bowling averages, was the 3rd XI player of the year.

The champagne moment went to young all-rounder Mark Gilmour, who hit 73 in 34 balls to help win a T20 thriller against Brixham.

Rob Shergold won the Sunday XI award for his consistent batting and Clubman of the year was Keith Benton for his hard work as a fund raiser.
